You can work this out instead of fighting it out.

What is mediation for parenting plans?

Working with a family mediation professional is for those parents who would rather avoid court and are willing to have a neutral party involved to keep things - at the very least - polite and cooperative so you can keep the channels of communication open, keep the separation process moving forward and have the best interests of your child(ren) at heart.

We can help you resolve your issues in a healthier, more constructive way.

“The goal of resolving conflict in a relationship is not victory or defeat. It’s reaching understanding and letting go of our need to be right.”

When parents separate, decisions between both parents are put into a ‘parenting plan’ that outlines how they will raise their children after the separation and divorce. Specifically, a parenting plan defines the responsibility of each parent as well as how parenting time will be shared between them.

The process of separation and divorce is already extremely stressful but if you add in summons, applications, motions, and affidavits the stress can become crippling.

Comparatively, mediation is a format that less adversarial and more collaborative - in favour of working together to meet in the middle rather than against each other.

This type of experience becomes helpful not only during the separation and divorce process but as new issues present themselves during the ongoing ex-partner, co-parent relationship.

Why choose mediation?

The most widely used dispute resolution process for separating and divorcing parents is mediation.

When parents separate, there are usually strong emotions and disagreements about parenting arrangements that are best for their children, and this can lead to conflict. Mediation is a process designed to resolve conflicts through a neutral and impartial third person - a mediator.

A mediator helps parents communicate and resolve misunderstandings by showing you how to identify the issues in dispute, discuss these issues and come up with possible solutions.*

PLEASE NOTE: Mediation is not a substitute for full legal representation, which is when a lawyer represents you from the start of your case to the end. A mediator does not determine facts, give legal advice, or decide the outcome of your case. It is strongly recommended that any mediated agreement be reviewed by a lawyer. This way, you can make sure you understand your legal rights and responsibilities before you sign.

BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH A MEDIATOR

  • Mediation is faster process than going to court

  • Mediation is more cost effective than going to court

  • Your discussions remain confidential and private

  • You have a lot of control over the timing, process, and results

  • You learn how to cooperate and this helps to address and discuss co-parenting in the future
